MSA VICTORIAN CHAPTER ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING
This final, brief, edition of Notes for 1999 contains a round-up of the annual Chapter Conference, the awarding of the Musicology Prize, and the Annual General Meeting, attended by a quorum of members, and resulting in changes to the Chapter Committee for 2000.
The Chapter AGM was held at 2pm on Friday 29 October 1999 at the Graduate Centre, University of Melbourne, with a quorum of financial members in attendance. Only one nomination was received for each of the five committee positions for 2000. Reports were received from the President, the Secretary and the Treasurer, and will be published in the next edition of Notes.
Carol Williams retires as President, after several years on the Chapter Committee; thanks were offered to Carol at the AGM for her enthusiasm as President for the last two years. The incoming President is Sue Robinson, who has also served on the Committee for several years, first as Notes editor and then as Conference Convenor.
John Weretka retires as Treasurer, and is replaced by Michael Christoforidis, a Research Fellow at the University of Melbourne. Sue Cole stays on as Secretary, and I am continuing for a third year as Notes Editor.

1999 MSA VICTORIAN CHAPTER CONFERENCE
& MUSICOLOGY PRIZE
At the 1999 Chapter Conference, on 29 October in the Graduate Centre at University
of Melbourne, papers were given by Chris Draber (Brahms chamber music), Tim Stevens
(Red Onion Jazz Band), Nino Tsitsishvili (report of field work in the Republic of
Georgia), Sally Watt (motets of Simonis Boyleau), Angeline Brasier (songs of Pauline
Viardot-Garcia), Nancy Calo (Dom Rosendo Salvado) and Jillian Graham (Margaret
Sutherland).
Congratulations to Jillian Graham (Masters candidate, University of Melbourne), winner
of the 1999 Musicology Prize of $250, for her paper:
The Indomitable Margaret Sutherland: Issues of Marriage, Family and Creativity
Margaret Sutherland is widely regarded as one of the most important and innovative
Australian composers of the twentieth century. During her career, she wrote many chamber,
instrumental, vocal and choral works, but also some orchestral music and a few scores for
theatre. It is widely understood that her marriage was less than ideal, and this paper
will take a more in-depth look at the impact of marriage and family on her career. A
broader understanding of her personality will be provided, and the quantity and nature of
her compositional output during the years of her marriage (19261948) and afterwards
will be examinsed. It will be suggested, in conclusion, that her creativity was not as
adversely affected by her domestic circumstances as has previously been inferred, and that
this might be explained in significant part by her indomitable spirit and the strength of
her convictions.
Thanks to Sue Robinson for her excellent work as Conference Convenor.
